How do I know if Aikido is for me?

Come, visit our dojo and practice with us two or three times.  Short or long sleeve tee shirt and sweatpants are recommended.  See who we are and train with us.  It's easier to know whether Aikido is something for you that way.  Contact us if you have any questions before coming to practice. Check our Schedule Page for training days and contact information.

Why doesn't every one wear a colored belt or hakema?

As students of Shoji Nishio Shihan we follow the custom of wearing a white belt until shodan which is 1st degree black belt.  Hakemas which are a pleated full split pant are worn at the recommendation of sensei .

Who is able to learn Aikido?

Anyone can learn aikido.  It is not based on strength, size or winning competitions.  Warm-up and cool down routines develop flexibility.  Our classes are for anyone thirteen years old or older.  Children younger than thirteen would follow a different curriculum according to their needs.  There is not a children class currently, if you have interest in one please contact us.

What are those sticks for?

The jo is a short staff.  The boken is a wooden practice sword.  The iato is a practice sword with a blunt edge and used in Aiki Toho Iaido which we also train on Sundays.

When is a good time to come and visit the dojo?

Tuesdays and Thursdays are primarily Aikido lessons. Sunday is often a combination of an Aikido and Aiki Toho Iaido lesson.  Beginners and others from different styles or martial arts are welcome to join us whenever we are training.
